Paul A. Gardner, MD

Dr. Gardner is the Peter J. Jannetta Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery and a Professor in the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Neurosurgical Director of the Center for Cranial Base Surgery as well as Executive Vice Chairman for Surgical Services for the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC)

Dr. Gardner joined the faculty of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 2008 after completing his residency and fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his undergraduate studies at Florida State University, majoring in biochemistry, and received his Medical Degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Dr. Gardner completed a two-year fellowship in endoscopic endonasal pituitary and endoscopic and open skull base surgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. His research has focused on evaluating patient outcomes following these surgeries and more recently on molecular phenotyping of rare tumors.  He is recognized internationally as a leader in the field of endoscopic endonasal surgery, a minimally invasive surgical approach to the skull base. His other surgical interests include pituitary tumors, open cranial base surgery, and vascular surgery

Dr. Gardner is certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery and is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Skull Base Society where he served as a Director-at-Large.  Dr. Gardner is co-editor of the textbook Skull Base Surgery, part of the Master Techniques in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery series published by Wolters Kluwer and co-director of The Pittsburgh Course: Endoscopic Endonasal Surgery of the Skull Base. He has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and he presents frequently on the podia of local, national, and international scientific meetings and courses

Medical degree cum laude, in 1996 at the “Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II”. Residency in Neurosurgery completed cum laude in 2001 with a thesis on “Sellar reconstruction after endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal surgery: results on a series of 170 cases”, published on Neurosurgery

Since 2002, he works as neurosurgeon at the Federico II University Hospital in Naples Assistant professor since 2012 and Associate professor since 2018. He has performed more than 1500 endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgeries and more than 500 endoscopic endonasal skull base surgeries for different intracranial lesions including craniopharyngiomas, meningiomas, clival chordomas and other rarer tumors. Beside this, he has performed as first or second surgeon, more than 900 neurosurgical procedures on the main pathologies of surgical interest of the Central and Peripheral Nervous System

Research activity has been focused, predominantly on: endoscopic endonasal pituitary and skull base surgery; endoscopic skull base anatomy; brain tumors; trigeminal neuralgia

师从中国内镜神经外科的开拓者张亚卓教授，从事垂体腺瘤、颅咽管瘤、脊索瘤等颅脑肿瘤的外科治疗，曾先后两次在美国匹兹堡大学颅底外科参观学习颅底内镜手术。基础研究方向为脊索瘤和垂体瘤的发病机制及治疗，精熟国内外最新治疗进展。2019年作为美国国家癌症研究院高级访问学者，对脊索瘤进行了深入研究。发表第一作者SCI论文二十余篇，包括nature communications等著名杂志
